My name is Alex van Houwelingen, a South African based illustrator. After graduating BA Information Design at the University of Pretoria in 2006, I decided to give freelance illustration a try and to my surprise and joy everything worked out well. Today I am a sought-after illustrator especially known for my versatility and work ethic. I have a special talent for understanding human and development communication as well as business. I know how to visualize ideas and concepts in such a way that they are understandable to a broad public. I pride myself on always going the extra mile for my clients. My illustrations are published in books and magazines all over the world and I get extremely excited when I am approached for a new project. (To be quite honest)
Alex is one of those rare creative people who is absolutely dedicated, amazingly talented, passionate about his work - and sticks to deadlines! It’s always a pleasure working with him.
Alex van Houwelingen is a publisher’s dream – he works independently, is always on time, and remains enthusiastic and highly professional even when the going gets tough.
I started working with Alex as a brand new, inexperienced Managing Editor in the educational publishing sector. Not only did he make it easy, but he delivered the most amazing work and made me look good! Alex's attention to detail and passion for his work clearly shows in every single piece he creates. He is my go-to artist for a wide variety of work because I know that the process will be enjoyable, and he will never disappoint. It has been, and will always be, a pleasure to work with such a creative, reliable and professional artist!
13 years ago, I had a project that required a visual that will explain multiple role-players in a very complex system. I knew I had to visualize the process, but didn't quite know how to go about. I also had a very limited budget. I reached out to students at a couple of art and design schools/universities, and Alex was the first one to respond. Even as a young student, his talent for not only the creative art but also for integration of information and clarifying messages, were astounding. We have a wonderful working relationship since then with more than 80 cartooning projects, many of them part of strategies that won local and global awards such as IABC Gold Quills, Loeries, and PRIMS. Alex is always on time, the work always to the highest standards, and his understanding of communication, information, and human behavior give him an edge over other artists. And when you just want to have fun and create graffiti street at your new office, Alex shows up with art students and also showed why he is more than just an artist in the form of being an amazing teacher. It is a privilege to work with this astute artists and intellectual.
Alex is an excellent illustrator, able to quickly understand key points and turn them into compelling visuals in a short space of time. We even used him to do live illustrations for one of our podcast series, and he produced up to five excellent cartoons within the space of one hour! Alex’s ability to work under tight deadlines, across a variety of styles and his wonderful sense of humor make him a pleasure to work with. His cartoons have complimented many of our media articles and appeared in several top media outlets.
